Venice dates back to 827 and prospered for nearly a thousand years on trade with the Middle East and the Byzantine Empire. During this time Venice was a wealthy city, with beautiful palaces and monuments built by talented architects who were sponsored by the leading families of the day. These fabulous buildings and monuments take pride of place, as testament of the city’s past. At the end of the eighteenth century tourism arrived bringing millions of visitors to marvel at the perfectly preserved canals and to explore the narrow winding streets, with beautifully formed bridges dissecting the streets and canals.
There are so many interesting sights to see and experience with highlights being the Doge’s Palace renowned for keeping Casanova under lock and key, the Rialto Bridge and market which is a joy for those who exist to shop, as small boutiques, quaint gift shops, atmospheric restaurants and the famous Rialto farmer‘s market beckon, and beautiful churches including the San Marco church and museums.
One of the highlights of any visit to Venice is Saint Mark’s Basilica with the an iconic symbol of the Basilica being the world renowned gilded bronze horses located at the top of the building. Within the Basilica are priceless treasures, exquisite paintings, frescos, intriguing places, a wealth of culture and a wonderful insight into the beginnings of this vibrant city.
