BBC2 has a great new three-part series called Sacred Rivers, the first of which was shown on Sunday and focused on the world’s longest river - the Nile. The series demonstrates how the world’s most sacred rivers don’t just flow through countries, they define them.
Simon Reeves travels from the holy source of the Blue Nile in the Ethiopian highlands, through the desert of Sudan and onwards through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.
The series reveals how this life-giving river has forged some of humankind’s earliest civilisations and influenced some of the world’s greatest religions. As populations along its banks increase rapidly and demand an ever-greater share of its sacred waters, the programme examines the pressures on this scarce resource.
